Behind The Curtain: A Junior Self-Portrait Illustration by Patrick Ogaz (2013)

For this illustration ''behind the curtain'' I took the theme for this from the personal essay from the lines that state ''don’t hide your individual uniqueness because it is rare and special.'' That line is very important because it is the setting for the whole essay. My essay is geared around how everyone is different and that people should not be afraid to be different, but instead be loud and proud that they are unique. This is why I picked this line to translate into the illustration.

Within creating this Illustration I had to convey the statement that everyone is rare and special without showing it directly. I created a metaphor to represent this. The first way this is portrayed is with the curtain. The curtain symbolizes the ‘shade’ part of my essay, because what is behind the curtain is unknown. The second metaphor is the hand and the hand is there to translate in multiple ways; the first being that it convey that someone was there on stage, however it was only the hand because I want to send the message that the person was nervous or scared of being on stage. The second reason was the fact that every hand is very different and none are alike. The final symbol that projected is the most obvious; the stage. With the stage and the spotlight it shows that something is talented enough to be displayed in front of many people, all the attention is towards you and your unique talent.
