Soar: A Senior Narrative Book Jacket by Peter Salcido (2014)

For this piece I painted the covers front and back. I wanted to give off the child-theme with the paint. I painted the hawk in a friendly way with different shades of brown, but I didn't want to make it boring so I added some swirls for the sky with a white cloud to show even more that the hawk is flying in the sky. I chose the title Soar because hawks fly and soar their wings across the sky, giving a sense of freedom. On the back cover, I painted the hawk's home in the forest. I painted different trees, big and small, to give some kind of dimension. I added a mouse because in the story, one of the main points I make is a mouse, so I felt I needed to incorporate one. I put sky on the flaps to go along with the title. I added a low-opacity rounded rectangle for the writer's comments to make it seem more professional, and because it was part of the requirements.

I used an Adobe InDesign template that Ms. P created for us students to use. I painted the front and back cover using Craft Smart acrylic paint on an Artist Loft canvas panel that is good for oil and acrylic paint. I then used a DSLR Rebel T3 from Canon to take a picture of them. I then used Adobe Photoshop to crop and brighten the two paintings I did. After that, I inputted them into InDesign and, voila, I have a book cover. I hope you enjoy my book cover.
