Truth Behind Graduation: A Senior Humor or Satire Art Project by Kaye Yap (2014)

For my humor design piece, I decided to incorporate irony and satire into my artwork. It is ironic because most people assume that when students graduate high school, especially the ones that made high accomplishments in high school, to know what they're doing with their futures and they graduate with everything they need to succeed in the future. In reality, most of these students are still terrified and afraid of their futures. It is satirical because it exemplifies a problem happening in our society in an exaggerated way. Plastering signs saying what they're feeling over their eyes shows how expressions on one's face doesn't mean anything anymore. Everything is concealed by a smile or a laugh and that is one of the main problems featured in today's teenage society.

To create my design piece, I used Adobe Illustrator and drew out my entire artwork. I used many, many layers and lots of paint brush strokes to create my design. I tried to incorporate a cartoon feel to my art to translate a juvenile feel. I took a photo of a small child with graduation clothes on and traced it in illustrator and copied it four times to create multiple students. Overall, I like the simplicity and message that my artwork portrays and I really enjoy how it turned out.
