To Believe or Not to Believe.: A Junior Conceptual Project by Sacha McDermott (2015)

I’m exploring the feeling of skepticism through the experience of making excuses. To create my fine arts piece I bought a medium size canvas and covered in completely in sandpaper. I then broke a mirror into large pieces and used black acrylic paint to create eyes on the mirror. I glued the pieces of the mirror to the canvas and then melted crayons around the pieces. I then photographed the finished piece and put it into photoshop. In photoshop I cropped the photo to show only my piece and created an outline of a question mark. I filled the question mark with an assortment of colors, to match my melted crayons, and then placed it in the center.

The sandpaper on the canvas represents the feeling of being uncomfortable. I chose the sandpaper because when we make excuses they’re often awkward, rushed and rough around the edges. I used the mirror with the eyes painted on it to represent skepticism. When we are skeptic we don’t always believe what we hear or see. The melted crayon was to build off of that unusual, unique effect and to show imperfection. Lastly the question mark brings the entire piece together. It’s simply asking one thing.. Do you believe what you see?
