Memory Lane: A Junior Design Student Conceptual Project by Parker Jue (2015)

I created this image by constructing a scrapbook, I cut out silhouettes of joyful scenarios such as someone with their friends, a family decorating a Christmas tree, and a child playing with new toys. The black silhouettes were placed on top of the photo paper to look like memories of times that simply never existed. I scattered some of the toy silhouettes and the art supplies to show that whoever is doing this is human, because envy is an a emotion that many people have experienced. My intention was to make the observer a little bit uneasy so I chose lighting that didn't look warm and inviting. The background was simple so that the focus would be on the silhouettes and the angle that I shot the photograph from was supposed to allow the viewer to be in the scrapbook creator's shoes. At Freestyle, I learned that photoshop can be a very useful tool in helping an individual convey their message. I was able to fix the lighting and take away the remaining warmth that the lighting gave the picture to try and have it embody the cold feeling of envy. In the previous week, I was able to learn how to make an accurate selection by using the pen tool. The pen tool proved to be very useful when I ended up applying a mosaic filter to the silhouette of a child playing with toys. I then fixed the color changes that the filter caused by using the stamp tool to transfer the exact color I wanted to a certain part of the image.

I believe that this photograph exemplifies my concept statement. The black silhouettes are supposed to represent the feeling of envy that an individual is feeling. This is because desire to have memories to enjoy looking back on but cannot because they simply do not exist. The scrapbook and the materials being used reveal how devoted this person is to this project, this essentially shows that envy has the potential to consume an individual.
