Shower Time: A Junior Visual Narrative Comic by Ryan Young (2016)

In my comic, a typical man is bored watching television. He gets fed up with boredom and decides that taking a shower is the solution to this problem. The man goes into the shower and shampoos his hair. After shampooing, the man realizes that there is no soap to wash his body with and the conflict arises. After moments of contemplation, the man decides to wash his body with shampoo.

This story was first developed in English as a flash fiction. This version contained very rough sketches in only black and white. The first step when I took this project into Design class was the rough sketch on graph paper.I wanted to create a product that would have more pop and stick out to the reader more, so I tried make more of an inorganic panel layout. I decided to use linear perspective for my establishing shot. This shot provided context for where the entire story was happening, and the linear perspective made it look a lot more realistic. These first sketches turned out nice, so I burnished them onto the thick white backing, and began to trace those impressions with a Sharpie. When I finished with the Sharpie, the hand-done product was done. After this we scanned the hand done comic and brought it into Illustrator. In Illustrator I encountered a few issues. Many of my panels were very similar, the same medium shot of this man. Therefore, I decided to rework some of my panels. The difference between the hand drawn comic and the comic done in Illustrator is significant. If I could change anything about my work, I would have had the shots that are new on the digital comic present for the entire process. This would have made the process faster and easier. Overall I am very proud of how this project turned out.
