Just One Moment: A Senior Black + White High Dynamic Range Diptych by Manon Laurent (2016)

On the left I added a picture of a tree from afar, and on the right I added a picture of a tree up close. In my life, I have always looked at the big picture; high school, college, life, then death. It was all very broad, very scary to say the least. Many people say it is good to look at the big picture, but in reality, it is equally important to notice the little details in life. The smallest moments in life have been some of the happiest, but I had never truly noticed this, so I continued to drag myself down with the thought that life was just a process everyone had to go through. The left side is telling the right to enjoy life’s little moments rather than constantly look at the bigger picture.

In order to create this composition, I used Photoshop to edit the two images and then also to place them side by side. Editing was the easier part of the process because it was mostly whatever felt right in the moment. The picture definitely needed added contrast, to be darkened, and to have a nice depth of field. The more difficult task was turning the two pictures into a diptych. I found myself changing the dimensions a couple of times before I was able to get it right. If I were to change anything, I would go back in and add more contrast. A picture can always be better edited.
