Home: A Senior Black + White High Dynamic Range Diptych by Avery Deaton (2016)

My diptych is about a life of travel and finding a place to settle down. It’s about the struggle of finding my way around the world and how I came to the place I have chosen the stay at. In my first picture, it shows the path I took to find my way home. The street explains the way I have traveled and the distance it took to get to where I want to be. The second picture I took was a compass on postcards in front of a house. This shows that I have traveled to many places to finally find a place where I feel happy and safe. The postcards represents all the places I have seen along the journey home. The two pictures come together to make a story of all the travel it took to get to where I want to be.

To begin the photo taking process, I took 5 photos in different IOS settings. The first picture was super hard to take because I need a street with no cars driving on it, plus an angle and a time to shoot it. I had to put a book under the lense to make the photo look like it’s on the ground. For the second picture, I took it lying down on the grass. Taking photos from different viewpoints and angles that made the compass pop out and visible to see where it was pointing to. It took me a very long time trying to find an angle of the compass on the postcards in front of the house. I wanted it to be a low angle showing the house in the background but blurred out so the main focus is on the compass and postcards. When I was editing the postcards, I wanted the focus to really be thorough and make it outline the places I have gone. I added filters and color differences to each of the photos to make it really pop with the white or black coloring. If I could go back and change anything it would be to make the filters more outgoing so you could really see how contrast they both are.
