Transport: A Junior Conceptual Transport Project by Julia Torokhov (2017)

My piece was a photograph of two shopping carts, one of Whole Food’s green and the other of Trader Joe’s red. The project it was taken for had the prompt of taking a photo of an object that while not having a motor, can also transport people. I used a 18-55mm lens set at 1/4.5 aperture, a 1/200 shutter speed, and 100 ISO. At first I was going to photograph bicycles, however decided after seeing the contrasting carts that they would serve a better subject. I do not know how these two carts from completely different stores ended up where they were, but yet they did. I found this very interesting. The photograph was taken around six, so the light was softer and more yellow-toned for a nicer shot.

I cut the photograph to bring focus onto the wheels, and leave the only other object to be the interesting grate the two carts had been resting on. I also desaturated the photograph and added a sepia-toned filter over it in Adobe Photoshop®. I did this do highlight the mundane nature of shopping carts, and also add an overall more 70’s aesthetic quality to the image; it also made the blur and grain in the photograph make more sense. I brightened the red of the Trader Joe’s cart by a little bit as well, to make the picture not look too washed out, and bring more focus to the first cart. This all helped the composition to make it look old and aesthetically pleasing.
