Bliss: A Junior Narrative Illustration by Marisa Novotarski (2018)

For my narrative short story, also called a flash fiction, I created a story in which a daughter is helping her mother cope with the stressful situation of a father in the hospital from an accident. She is an emblem of hope during the stress of the story. She creates a light that helps her mother think that things will get better. The daughter dances, laughs, and keeps happy in her own little world. She is portrayed as airy, light, and innocent. Her naivety is seen as a tool for hope and her calm is what keeps her mother supported.

To create my illustration, I brainstormed adjectives that could help describe the daughter. From those adjective (such as joyful, energetic, and cute), I thought of animals that also shared these traits. I chose a gecko to represent playfulness, a dove to represent the peace she brought her mother in the story, and a panda stomach to represent the cuteness of a child. Then, I began to plan the setting I would place my character in. I decided to place her in a sunny meadow with flowers in a jumping and playing pose to portray the fun my character has in the story. To create the illustration, I began by finding stock images off of the internet of the various animals I chose and tracing them in Adobe Illustrator. After tracing each aspect that I wanted to include, I looked to the Pantone Color Resource book to find color schemes that paired well with the mood I was trying to create with my character. I chose brighter color schemes for the character and details points, such as the flowers and the details of the clothing. I chose a darker, warmer scheme for the background to try and support the calm that was also present in the character.
