The Kite Narrative Illustration: A Junior Narrative Illustration by Talar Sarkissian (2018)

In my flash fiction story a young boy eager to make friends pushes through his shyness in order to make a connection. He challenges himself to build a kite in order to gain her attention and make a new friend. Although it takes some trial and error he is able to build a homemade kite as well as build the courage to approach her. By taking a risk and stepping outside his comfort zone he is able to create a bond with someone new using a kite.

This translates into my hybrid animal which is part rabbit, mouse, and elephant. The mouse face representing his shy quiet side, while the elephant ears show that although quiet he is observant of his surroundings and others interests. Lastly the rabbit body shows how he made a physical effort in order to gain a connection jumping over any obstacle put in front of him. My background is meant to represent a park far from a large city. Wondering and curious my animal is learning the skills to take on the world. My design process began by selecting my animals and starting sketches. After various edits I finally settled on my final sketch and background and moved into Illustrator. Since this was our first large project in the software it took a couple long nights and dedication but I eventually ended up with my final product. My background is drawn in a one point perspective the trail leading to the vanishing point and horizon line. My illustration is filled in with a pantone color palette of pastels. Overall I enjoyed this project and although at times a challenge it represents a lot of learning and improvement in Illustrator and was an interesting first project.
