I am experiencing the feeling of anguish through being used.: A Junior Design Student Conceptual Project by Hugo Pappalardo (2019)

To represent the feeling of anguish I chose a knife. To represent being used I chose to photograph a $20 bill. These two objects in tandem with one another could convey a sense of betrayal or a dispute over possessions. For this composition, the two subjects themselves are on a picnic table sitting directly adjacent from the firepit in the background. Also, the firepit provided appropriate lighting to convey a certain air of sadness or discomfort which was appropriate given my concept statement. Due to the lighting, fingerprints are visible on the knife's blade. This feature intends to make the viewer question what it has been used upon.

I believe that in this instance my photograph represents my concept statement. In multiple ways. The two objects central to the composition of the photo are a Swiss Army Pocket Knife and a $20 Bill. The $20 bill represents the experience of being used, as my $20 of bi-monthly food money was exactly what I used to get used for. I chose the Swiss Army Pocket Knife as a small pocket knife is traditionally a symbol for betrayal. In more specificity, knives have ended the lives of some extremely prominent historical figures (including Julius Caesar) in some extremely violent ways. My intention in this was to utilize the sense of betrayal to convey anguish.

In utilizing photoshop I learned how to more precisely edit. For my final conceptual composition, I utilized a cooling filter with a blue tint to counteract the overbearing warmth, and a black vignette to draw the eye of viewers to the subject(s). I also made edits to the exposure and contrast as lighting and contrast of the unedited photograph was unusually harsh due to it being night and lit only by fire. Related website
