Exploring the feeling of excitement when creating music.: A Junior Design Student Conceptual Project by Belle Williams (2019)

At first, I thought this concept statement was mundane, but then I looked deeply into it and came out with the photograph I present to you. For creating music, I decided on glass Mason jars with different water levels which represent repetition and making music. Then, I placed black skinny candles that were burning near the water. There are four mason jars, while there are only three candles. This is meant to convey the simmering excitement as the water layers go down. In the last jar, you can see glitter, resembling the after effects of the excitement. Choosing a plain background and dark lighting allowed me to place more focus on the objects in the photograph.

Glasses with different water levels can make entrancing music of different pitches. Candles always give me a sense of excitement, from the warm flicker of the fire to the wax melting and dripping down. Candles remind me of birthdays, bonfires, and the soft light of my grandmother's house at Christmas. Listening to music is also an exciting experience for me since it reminds me of making my first “good” note on the cello or going to concerts with friends.

While editing this photo, I discovered what a vignette is and also how lighting and contrast are key elements in taking and editing photos. The vignette is the fading around the corners, which helps draw the viewer's eye to the middle of the photograph. Along with lighting, I used “Curves” in Photoshop to add contrast to the photograph. These elements all combined and helped me execute what I had pictured in my mind to produce the final image. Related website
