Jay Moriarity Patch: A Junior Illustration Project by Callum Brydon (2020)

For my illustrator project I decided to make an embroidered patch with a saying that meant something to me. The saying I chose to display was “Live Like Jay,” which originated in Santa Cruz and was coined after Jay Moriarity, a big time surfer who grew up there. Throughout his career Jay built an extremely friendly, easy going reputation for himself in a sport where most were closed off, serious and protective. At the same time he displayed fierce determination to his craft and was always pushing himself to out-do himself. His presence was a breath of fresh air in the surfing world which made his death all the more tragic. In 2001 he passed a way free-diving at the young age of 22. The saying “Live like Jay” carries on his spirit of hardwork and positivity which is why I decided to embed it on my patch. The saying does not simply apply to surfing as it is relevant to just about anything you do.

I value the freedom I had while working on this project as we were given many different options for the type of object we wanted to produce. While our projects in the past have been relatively structured, for this one we were on our own and had to figure things out by ourselves. This was challenging for me as Adobe Illustrator is something that I've had a lot of trouble figuring out however through this project I am starting to get a feel for the program. Furthermore, I was able to incorporate my love of surfing and its history into the project which made it a lot more enjoyable and fun to work on. Related website
