BAT**** Crazy!: A Junior Illustration Project by Charlotte Cuevas (2020)

For my illustrator project I wanted to incorporate some sort of movement but obviously since it is a still image I had to figure something out. Earlier this year we learned how to create complex shapes by using a simple shape and scale, move, and change the angle. The main idea behind my design was coming out and showing your true colors in whatever sense you would want to interpret. I wanted to create a design that would portray the outgoing and adventurous side that always gives me that kick to give me confidence. I wanted to clearly communicate the idea of portraying your true self outwards so I used the transforming effects to expand the person outwards in a “crazy” way. I made a bat simply because they are really cool creatures and they are nocturnal creatures (just like me). The sleeves are just green and purple because I’ve always loved the Joker and purple is clearly superior to anything. Spirals were added to give it that last “crazy” look to it and overall I was trying to make it somewhat like an optical illusion.

I valued a lot from this project because of all the liberty and responsibility we were given for our choices and because of how awesome everyone’s project turned out. There were a variety of different choices ranging from candle shades to patches. I learned how to use what I knew to my advantage and ended up combining all the previous lessons to create something more my style. This project taught me that I can usually research different methods of Adobe Illustrator tools to help me be more Efficient.

Despite all the confusion and mistakes that I came across, it was extremely fun to work on and even cooler to see how we can use our skills to create a variety of art and designs. Every time I see a cool shirt or sweater, I imagine the different methods the artist might've used to create it and wonder how I would do it differently. Related website
