Soul Eater: A Junior Illustration Project by Karla Oregon (2020)

In this assignment we were able to choose from multiple different projects. At first I had trouble deciding which one to do but when Mr. Florendo showed me what the night light looked like, I instantly thought of different ideas. Since it was a night light, I imagined it would go in a room so I wanted to create something I would enjoy looking at before I go to sleep. Having that in mind, I thought of things that brought joy to me. After some careful thinking, I settled on anime because it’s one of my favorite things to watch. Anime has played a major role in the way I bond with my dad and brother. My dad was the one that introduced anime to my brother and I at a young age. Ever since watching Dragon Ball Z with my dad, my brother and I began to watch other anime. Our favorite one became Soul Eater because it was both serious and comedic. One scene in particular that made us both laugh was of a small creature called Excalibur. After deciding what to do, I searched up images of the scene where Excalibur is singing. I then chose an image and placed it onto a layer in Adobe Illustrator. Using the pen tool, I outlined Excalibur on a different layer. One thing that Excalibur constantly says to the other characters is “Fool.” So using the text tool, I typed “Fool” in all caps and placed the outline of Excalibur on top. I felt like having only Excalibur on my night light wasn’t enough so I searched up images of the other character’s souls. I then did the whole process again and finished my illustration. This project was really fun and I enjoyed every step of completing it. Related website
