Orchid Candle Shade: A Junior Illustration Project by Melany Leal (2020)

For my Illustrator project, I decided to do something for and related to my grandmother. She is the kind of person that loves plants more than anything and has a varied collection of flowers in every corner of her house but there is one plant that is more meaningful for her than the other ones. It is an orchid that was about to die, but my grandma took care and rescued it. I was inspired by that story, so I designed a Morrocan candle shade with the shape of an orchid in the middle surrounded by leaves. Even though it is a very simple design it took me a lot of thinking to come up with a design that was actually going to work since I had to think in the printing part as well. For the frames, I went with a less complex design since most of the inner part is replete with leaves. I wanted to maintain the balance and not make it look overwhelming.

From this project, I value all the new techniques that I learned from this class and by playing with the different tools of Illustrator, from learning how to draw a line to be able to create more complex shapes. I appreciate that these new techniques will help me a lot in the future whether I decide to study something art-related or just to expand my creativity. What I also value from this project was the freedom of expression that we had. I think this is an interesting project because we had the opportunity to produce any design for various objects. We had various options such as stickers, patches, night lights, candle shade, and even a phone case. These are things that I usually buy, but I never thought I would get to design one. Now I realized that I was capable of creating a design by myself, which makes me more self-confident of my art skills. Related website
