LOVE: A Junior Illustration Project by Ryan Abe (2020)

During this project, Freestyle students were tasked with creating a product of our choice utilizing our recently learned Illustrator skills. The product that I chose to create was a T-shirt graphic. My graphic was a combination of one of my favorite tv shows and a value important to me. I took the NERV logo from Neon Genesis Evangelion, a tv show, and changed the word NERV to LOVE instead. I chose to do a simple logo because I wanted to create a graphic that wouldn’t overwhelm my relatively new Illustrator skills, yet also look clean and stylish. Clothes are like a window into another person’s personality, interests, and overall lifestyle. Therefore, it was important for me to create something that I would be proud to wear. By combining two things that I like, I ended up creating something uniquely personal and representative of me.

During this Illustrator project, I valued simplistic clarity over convoluted chaos. After restarting the project over multiple times, I quickly realized that designs, especially t-shirt designs, don’t need to be complete in order to be good. Just because a graphic doesn’t have as many lines or as many colors as another doesn’t detract from it’s overall worth. Something as simple as a logo from a show you like coupled with some words you like is enough to be a stylish, unique design. By keeping the project simple, I also was able to better execute the idea. No mastery of complex techniques were needed in the creation of my t-shirt graphic. Related website
