Night Sky: A Junior Illustration Project by Anna Finlay (2020)

When creating this piece, my primary motive was to communicate a sense of serenity for the viewer. I was guided by grounding imagery that I imagine can be enjoyed timelessly. I portray the different phases of the moon, which circle around a grassy hill overlooking a night sky. I am very inspired by nature, and I hope that it reminds the viewer of previous stargazing experiences. The moon is universal, it is something that connects us all. I want people to be reminded that the same moon hangs over every one of us at night. And no matter where you are, you can observe the same moon we all share. Ultimately, I was driven by the idea that my present self, my future self, and even my future children may be able to share in the universal beauty of the night sky.

I learned a lot with this Illustrator project. Namely, I learned about the precision of our laser-cutting machine. In the future I hope that I will be able to make more, similar projects, as I greatly enjoyed the opportunity to illustrate something that will (hopefully) live on for a long time. I have also continued to develop my artistic style and technical ability on digital applications. I demonstrated this through the hatching that I incorporate (both vertical and horizontal lines) which I have been using more and more in my artwork. Additionally, similarly to my geometric light cover, I combined organic and boldly geometric shapes to create a unique composition. Related website
