Hall and Oates T-Shirt: A Junior Illustration Project by Sarah Bettinger (2020)

I designed this t-shirt to show my love of music, especially old music. I really like the music of Daryl Hall and John Oates, a musical duo of the 1980’s. While their music could be described as basic pop music, it represents the popularity of the synthesizer as well as the bright, energetic beats that defined the music of the 1980’s. Their faces are composed of basic shapes with very little detail but their forms and the background are accented by bright colors, demonstrating how even something considered “basic” can be bright and unique.

I really valued this project because it was fun to choose something that I wanted to design and spend class time working on a product I was excited about. It was really fun for me to see how my design came together using Adobe Illustrator and it made me feel more confident in my digital art skills. This project was a great example of how Freestyle Academy pushes students to create physical products to demonstrate learning rather than filling up time with “busy work”. The adaptability of this project was important to me because everyone’s product was uniquely theirs and represented a part of themselves. Related website
