Drag Me Under: A Senior Movie Poster by Cameron Semple (2020)

“Drag Me Under” takes place in a small lakeside town in the 1920s. The town’s dependence on fishing leads to overfishing and polluting the water. For whatever reason, fishermen begin going missing. Something lurks below the surface of the water leaving the town frightened and ready to attack. The protagonist, a young woman on break from university, tries to convince the town that they had brought this on themselves with the pollution. As tensions rise between the town and the entity in the water, the protagonist realises that she must pick a side. My poster depicts a surrealist interpretation of the lake and the destruction caused by humans in the town. I used Adobe Illustrator to create this poster.

The artist I drew inspiration from is German artist Max Ernst (1891-1976), who was prominent in his participation in the Dada and Surrealist movements. While Ernst is more commonly recognized for his surrealist paintings, I focused more on his early works from the Dada movement, which mainly consisted of collages. Some recurring themes of Ernst’s work that influenced my poster include the combination of nature with mechanics and water used as a deadly element. Related website
