Secrets: A Junior Design Student Conceptual Project by Alessandro Valdevit (2020)

For my conceptual art project, I used the imagery of an envelope surrounded by broken glass. When shooting this photo I deliberately used dark lighting to fit with the theme of anxiety. I tilted the envelope, placed it on the glass and shot at a low angle to illuminate the important objects, and make the photo interesting. Finally, I chose a subtle background so that the viewer could focus on the objects and feelings that I was attempting to portray. All of these decisions together made the final product interesting while fully portraying the concept statement from my English class.

My photo exemplifies my concept statement through the two objects, A sealed envelope and shattered glass. The sealed envelope contains elements of both anxiety and keeping secrets. The viewer is supposed to imagine that an important secret is inside and that it is meant to be read by only one person. This object also creates a sense of anxiety as others want to know what the envelope contains. The bright shattered glass around the envelope helps further convey this feeling of anxiety.

Finally, I used Photoshop to add the finishing touches to this photo. In design class, I learned how to make small adjustments such as changing lighting, contrast and hue. Before shooting the photos I had an idea for the kind of lighting and contrast I wanted however, they didn't come out exactly as I wanted them to. Photoshop enabled me to slightly darken the photo, enhance its colors and bring out the contrast between the glass and stone. Related website
