Bay Area Boba Babes: A Junior Illustration Project by Kylie Cota (2021)

Growing up Asian in the Bay Area had its ups and downs, and recently, there have been a lot more downsides. Even just existing and going about everyday life is enough for people to be assaulted, or worse, killed. There has been a huge spike in Asian hate crimes as of 2020-2021. Through all the downsides my family has faced from this, we still have each other, and have been able to remain positive and hopeful towards the future. I was inspired by a small positive thing my Mom and I have been doing since 2020. She and I love boba a lot and have traveled to many different cities and locations just to try boba. We first began with us just posting our reviews on my Snapchat story but has now extended to her posting on her Facebook, where her followers send us different locations to try and ask for more recommendations. We visited dozens of different locations, supporting smaller Asian-owned boba shops, and going as far as Capitola and Oakland to try new places. We eventually came up with the name, “Bay Area Boba Babes” as our official title, and our followers ate it up!

This project meant a lot to me, as I am able to give something back to my mother, who has driven and paid for so many of my drinks and always got me my favorite drink on a bad day. She has always been a strong figure in my life, so hardworking, and was always willing to help others. She loves to support smaller businesses, especially during this pandemic and has stopped using bigger businesses just to support local businesses and businesses owned by minorities. We’ve seen firsthand how hatred can damage others, and she always finds a way to spread positivity when she can. So, Mom, this is for you. Related website
