Mother Nature's Songs: A Junior Illustration Project by Mia Bassett (2021)

My inspiration for this project was Skylark Ranch, a summer camp that I have attended all of my life that burned down in August. I wanted to make something for my camp friends and I that would be a way to remember our time there. I decided to base the design from the song “Upside Down” by Jack Johnson as that was our CIT song in 2019. Specifically, I chose the lyrics, “We’ll sing and dance to Mother Nature’s songs” because of their beautiful imagery and significance to camp. I decided to make an embroidery patch because of their convenient size and also their significance to Girl Scouts, as Girl Scouts put patches on their sashes to honor achievements.

Using Illustrator for this project was challenging because it is a new tool to me, but it was very rewarding. I learned the importance of creating many layers- way more than you think you will need. I am so excited to give my friends this patch and to have it help keep the camp memory alive. Related website
