Froggy Ocean: A Senior Surreal Photo by Lia Tsur (2020)

For my surrealist image, I chose to just make something that makes me happy. I combined frogs, the ocean, a bearded dragon and 2020 Democratic Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders in whatever place came to me in a way that made me giggle. I was born in Tel Aviv, which is a city that sits right on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, so the ocean always reminds me of where I came from. My favorite animals are frogs so I lined them up in the ocean looking towards a Bernie Sanders sun. Bernie was a candidate that gave me hope, and even though he didn't get the nomination, I still like to think about him as a hopeful figure. The last aspect is a bearded dragon surfer. I used to watch the surfers on the beach in Tel Aviv in complete awe because I thought they were so cool. The dragon is an homage to my best friend's bearded dragon, Phoenix. the result is a photograph that has no real meaning overall but just makes me happy.

I really love the surrealist movement. One of my favorite painters is the René Magritte because of the striking images he painted. This meant that I was super excited for this. I did struggle a lot with placing and blending images, but after a bit of practice I got the hang of it. I don't think I would change anything. Perhaps I'd make the surfer a bit bigger but other than that I wouldn't change anything major. I'm proud of just creating something that makes me smile. It's a stupidly fun image that while not super meaningful, is still something that I love. Related website
