For our second project of the year, seniors in Freestyle Academy’s Design elective were tasked with creating an aboriginal painting using a combination of astrological signs along with traditional native Australian symbols. For my painting I chose the Bush Yam and Crescent moon symbols along with the constellation for my astrological sign Aries. The Bush Yam being at the center of my painting symbolizes the metaphorical center of life which is health and well-being. I used the color red for this portion as it corresponds with fire which is the element of the Aries symbol.
To create this project students used skills learned in Digital Media as well as the more advanced techniques taught to us in Design. In order to create an authentic looking aboriginal painting (meant to look ancient) I used a variety of different dot sizes and shapes. This process not only made the final product feel more authentic and almost hand painted but also gave it an interesting feel through the use of negative space.
