Night: A Aboriginal Dot Painting by Lleyton Brouwer (2021)

The symbols I used in this piece were the resting place, campsite, human tracks, and the star symbol. I put the resting place symbol in the upper middle of my composition, acting as a divider between the top and bottom half of my artwork. On the bottom half were my human tracks and campsites, with the human tracks leading away from the resting place toward the bottom right and bottom left corners. Directly under the resting point was the Virgo symbol, which represents me. Above the resting point, on the other hand, were my star symbol, moon, and constellation. I debated putting these symbols on the bottom half of my artwork, as that was common in many of the examples I looked at, but I decided the balance was better with it on top.

I created this piece using Adobe Photoshop brush tools, marking each individual dot by hand. The main problem I encountered was the painting the dots, as when I started, each dot was wonky and didn’t look quite right - they were lopsided and despite the volume of dots, still didn’t have the uniform look I wanted. Over time, I improved at this and was able to paint the dots correctly. If I did this again, I would want to redo the resting point dots, as I think they look very uneven on the brown part.
