Kanye VIII: A Senior Surreal Photo by Lleyton Brouwer (2021)

I’m not really trying to convey a message in this composition, I just thought this would be an interesting mix of two very different, but somehow similar, people.

The techniques I found most useful for the Surreal Composition were clipping masks, as they were able to fit Kanye West’s face onto Henry VIII’s body, and this entire combination onto a background of one of Kanye West’s album covers. I also found blend modes to be useful, as I used them to incorporate a texture of oil painting onto my composition.

I think both surreal and realistic compositions can be very interesting and fun to create in their own respects. I would say that realistic compositions are easier to get right, or at least they can be done correctly more consistently. With my realistic projects this semester, most of them were more straightforward than this surrealist project, because, by the beginning, I knew exactly what I wanted to create. With the surrealist work, on the other hand, my final image in my head was constantly developing and changing with every image I found on the internet, and with every compositing assignment, I looked back on.
