88^: A Senior Surreal Photo by Natalie Lo (2021)

My surreal composition was made as a tribute to my friends who went to a festival with me two weekends ago. I got so much closer with them and they took care of me while I was sick. I wanted to capture the euphoric teenage vibes I felt throughout my whole weekend at the festival. I wanted my surreal composition to capture how beautiful music festivals can be and how it made me youthful. I was surrounded by people who genuinely loved music and I wanted to appreciate it by creating this piece.

Some useful techniques I found useful for the surreal composition were the different blend modes, the selection tool, and the black mask. Playing with the different blend modes helped me create a better overall aesthetic for this piece. I used the selection tools to make all the cutouts that I later blended back into the photos. The black mask was also helpful to help create the cut outs as well as blend in the rough edges.

I think surreal composition allows me to be more creative and let’s me explore more. The realistic composition forced us to think logically and how we can utilize our tools to make it seem more believable. With surrealism, you don’t have to do that and instead you can let your creativity wonder. I really enjoyed this surreal composition and the tools I learned will definitely come in handy in later projects Related website
