7am (shape)Shift: A Senior Surreal Photo by Tori Florian (2021)

I think what I’m trying to convey in my piece “7AM (shape)Shift” is that a shift at 7 AM is too early for my brain to comprehend things. It’s a bit like a limbo of dreaming and reality. Another message that I saw in my piece is that I tended to include a lot of childhood things. First of all, it’s in the kids section at Marshalls; there's me sitting on the floor with stuffed animals and a raccoon wanting a toy. I like to think of it as when you were little and your parent or guardian has told you “We’re going to (any other section that's not the toys section)” and you just want to stay there because it’s so cool.

Some techniques that I found useful were the blend modes and the most useful of them all was definitely zoom in, zoom out. It was my best friend to the end. That with the detailed brush was like peanut butter and jelly, a combo made in heaven. It helped me make shadows and keep details that I wanted.

I think Surreal Compositions definitely have more freedom than Realistic Compositions do. For example, in Surreal Compositions, the images don’t necessarily have to blend into the picture because they’re surreal in other words meaning not real. Related website
