Soulmates: A Senior Surreal Photo by Valorie Spade (2021)

In this piece, I wanted to portray the relationship between my two friends, Natalie and Nora. Natalie acts as the main subject, but inside of her, you can see bits of Nora. They both sit on each shoulder, acting as the angels and devils that whisper in her ear. The arms extending from either side represent how together, they create balance.

In this composition, I mostly used photos of my friends. Because of this, I didn't need to worry much about creating continuity through color editing. Some of the photos were overexposed, however, so I edited them to match the exposure of the rest of the images. By creating masks, I was able to isolate each figure, making them easy to manipulate and mess around with. I thought a lot about the composition of this piece, so being able to change the positions of each figure whenever I wanted to was really helpful.

I enjoyed creating a surreal composition rather than a realistic composition, because I was able to treat this like an art piece rather than a “believable” photo. The allowance for creativity made this project really fun, and I feel that I was able to express myself a lot better than if I were limited to a realistic composition. Related website
