Adventures in Underwater Marine Life as an Agnostic: A Senior Digital Watercolor Painting by Caleb Pierce (2021)

The story behind this piece is that I felt like changing things up. I wanted to make something that was amateur in looks, but also provide a sense of comfort, which is exemplified in the choice of color. There is purposefully a slight off-kilter vibe, most notably with the large humanoid figure that appears to be a distance from the viewer's perspective. The story is meant to be a reflection of my own laziness, to make something pretentious in a short period of time. The miniature artworks in the center are meant to be a focal point, and a distraction from all other parts of the painting, because if you saw something small and very detailed on a real painting, no doubt you would immediately go in for a closer look.

I think the most meaningful connections with myself and watercolor painting were rolling with the flow (literally) of the water (in personal projects with physical watercolor), going abstract to represent physical things (since make precise lines and shapes is nearly impossible), and not working in isolation (which I connected with, since finding inspiration for art comes mainly from inside myself, from love, and my own environment).

This project in comparison to the pastel painting was very different, this one was much easier to take an abstract approach and work with the blobs and blotches to make something cohesive. The pastel painting is fun, but using a real subject was really the only way to go on that one. This piece was fun to make, and I most enjoyed the non-traditional details and aspects. In respect to digital vs. analog painting, I think I would pick analog more often than not, however much I do enjoy the digital painting ad would continue to do so. Related website
