About the overarching Unit Question:
For the Conceptual Project, Juniors develop their abstract thinking and communication skills to answer the question
"How can I use unconventional forms to express myself?"
This project emphasizes creative risk-taking through poetry, music, art, animations, experimental film and web production, challenging students to express their opinions through a distinct personal aesthetic. Students begin developing their technical communication skills by learning a variety of modern professional equipment and applications such as DSLR cameras, Digital Audio Workstations (DAW), Wacom Cintiqs, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Animate, Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Audition, Avid Pro Tools, WordPress websites, and Google Apps.
About the specific project within the unit that is featured in this gallery:
Every year, all of Freestyle Academy visits the SFMOMA to view and become inspired by art. At the museum, students were tasked to locate an artwork that fills them with awe for a written reflection in English because:
“Awe is the feeling of being in the presence of something vast that transcends your current understanding of the world.”
“We can find awe in eight wonders of life: moral beauty, collective effervescence, nature, music, visual design, spirituality and religion, life and death, and epiphany.”
― Dacher Keltner, Awe: The New Science of Everyday Wonder and How It Can Transform Your Life
In Digital Media, students learned to use Adobe Audition for a voiceover recording of that written reflection and also Premiere Pro to produce these short videos in this gallery including the techniques of keyframing visual and audio parameters.
