Narrative Visual Perspective in Film

For our film narrative project, we created our very own short story. We did a full process as if we were in an actual Hollywood studio. My narrative is about a young man named Mike that is in a struggling relationship with his girlfriend. Mike calls his girlfriend every day revealing at the end of the story that she recently passed away and he was listening to voicemails to remember her.

Logline and Synopsis

A young man struggles to keep his relationship together later to find out it was all a false reality.

Mike sits on a coffee table listening to his girlfriend apologize for something that she did.  Mike comes back home from school and gets on a phone call with his girlfriend. He then walks into the house and drops his stuff on the floor. He walks into the pantry and starts eating a bag of chips. As he stays on the call with his girlfriend, she nags and tells Mike to get rid of his bad habits. Telling him to eat healthier, not to drop everything on the floor because he could trip, and clean up the house. Mike listens and seems slightly annoyed that she continuously nags him about his bad habits. Mike walks to the kitchen and pours himself a glass of water. His girlfriend started talking about her day and they both have a good laugh. She eventually asked if he was still drawing. Saying that she loved it when he drew sketches and asked why he doesn’t do it anymore. Mike pauses and walks to the counter and looks at the sketchbook. He flips through the book and glances at all of the pictures. His girlfriend tells Mike that she had to stay a little longer for work so she will be home later and leave early in the morning again but call her when she wakes up. He stops at the last recent drawing and then closes the book, tosses it to the side, and ends the call.

The next day Mike wakes up and turns the alarm off. He looked next to him and saw that his girlfriend had already left for work. Mike calls his girlfriend and starts to brush his teeth. His girlfriend tells him good morning and to have a good day. She said she made him breakfast but to please clean the house before he goes out after he eats. Mike washes his face and heads downstairs to open the refrigerator. He opens the door and notices nothing is there. He pours himself a glass of water and grabs a muffin. Mike walks to the kitchen table and then start to slowly eat his food.

His girlfriend starts to talk about what happened this morning at work but eventually asks Mike what he was doing later this afternoon and suggested that he should draw something.

Mike looks at the sketchbook on the table and then looks up, walking through a memory of him and his girlfriend drawing and painting. Mike picks up the sketchbook and opens it to start drawing. His girlfriend asks him to talk to her but he continues to draw in his book and eventually finishes the sketch. As Mike picks up the phone to say something to his girlfriend, she ends the call. Mike begins to feel sad and puts his phone back down on the table. Mike taps on his phone, revealing that the call was actually a voicemail. Mike replays the voicemail listening to her voice. He listens to her asking him if he was still drawing because she loved it when she would make art. Mike starts to tear up listening to her. He scrolls up and taps on the most recent voicemail. It was from the hospital, informing Mike that his girlfriend had unfortunately passed away from a car crash. Mike replays the voicemail multiple times and eventually puts down the phone to look back at the sketch. He looks at the sketchbook and then closes it.
