Introduction
The Conceptual Project was one of learning and self-expression. Through this project, we began to learn skills in a variety of professional tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid Pro Tools, and WordPress. Many of the assignments done during this time period were about learning to effectively express ourselves in a creative manner. As an introduction to Freestyle, these projects help me begin to think in a different manner, one where the creative elements are brought forward.
Poems
In English class, we were tasked with writing a free verse poem based on a concept statement that we had drawn randomly.
Photo Haiku
As the first writing project that we undertook at Freestyle, the Photo Haiku incorporated skills that we learned in several classes. From Digital Media we would learn the very basics of video editing and recording audio. English would assist with the creation of the haiku, as we studied the structure of the style.
Completing the Photo Haiku helped me understand the tempo that Freestyle was set at. It more closely mirrored what was expected in the working world. Time management was an essential skill that was improved during this project.
Elements & Principles of Art
Before this project, we did not know what made art, art. This short work gave us some insight into the qualities that lie within art.
Experimental Film
Experimental films are unique to what you might normally watch in a theatre. Abstraction is essential to the success of a good experimental film. From their plot to the manner in which they are edited, this style of film requires the creator to break some of the storytelling norms.
When creating our films we had to follow a concept statement that we had created in our English class. Concept statement in hand, we walked into class and pitched our ideas to the class, to which many got changed and improved. My final idea was a burning forest with one tree surviving alone in the middle. While this started with the idea of using footage of a real tree, after my rough screening it was changed to a clay set.
