Narrative

Our project in design was to create a book cover that matched the tone and genre of the short stroy we wrote in English. The title of my book is 1000 Paper Memories. For the background image I used a photograph I took of raindrops on a window pane. I also used a photograph of a paper crane I had folded out of a ski map and overlayed it with red so it would pop against the black and white background. I used the color red to unify the different elements of the design including the crane and parts of the text. I added the price, publisher’s logo and barcode to add authenticity to this piece. The bio, blurb, and reviews are my writing, and the portrait of the author was taken by Emma Halliday. I really liked this project because I love to read it was cool to design something that is very important in the book industry and learn about the different parts that go into creating a book cover.

Also part of this unit was the surrealism project, which is shown below.

In this piece, perspective is warped as the ground has become the sky and the clouds have become the ground. Someone is standing on a swing and it looks like they are about to step into the clouds. There is a sentence in chalk overlayed on the clouds. There are also blurred circles overlaid on top of the clouds. I used Photoshop to create this composition by cutting out the image of the girl on the swing and placing it on top of an upside down image of clouds and the ground. I placed the circles and writing on top of this and lowered the opacity of these images. I also put a drop shadow underneath the girl and the writing. The meaning of this piece is that sometimes in this world everything feels upside down and uncertain and we never know where life will take us next.
