Showcase

Hello! My name is Hudson Jones, and I’m a Film student at Freestyle Academy. Throughout my two years in the program, I’ve learned a lot about film production, directing, storytelling and editing. Outside of my projects at Freestyle, I enjoy hanging out with my friends, watching Netflix, playing with my dogs, and writing short stories.  I’m really excited to give you a window into what I’ve accomplished at Freestyle!

The first project I’ve chosen to share is my Junior documentary, titled “Arts For All,” which I co-directed with my partner, Katie Bousse.  I picked this project because it was possibly the most difficult one I took on in terms of the workload, and as such, I’m proud to have come out of it with a professional-looking piece.  On top of this, the documentary covers a topic that I find very personally meaningful, which is the presence of fine arts education in the public education system. Because of this, I think my most useful role was during the pre-production and production phases.  I brainstormed questions, planned out our documentary’s theme, and conducted professional interviews. I’d love to receive your feedback on the interviews in the documentary. Did they add enough context and properly communicate the theme of the film? What are some ways I could have gotten even more meaningful responses from the interviewees? Plot was another thing I struggled with a bit more with the documentary, because it’s more of a grey area.  Was it easy to follow the direction the film was going in? Did it feel well-paced? If I was to do it over again, how could I make it flow better?

The second piece I will be showcasing is my Senior Narrative film, “A Blind Date,” which I co-directed with my partner, Robyn Watson.  This may be the project I am most proud of completing at Freestyle. It is the culmination of all the skills I had learned in over a year and a half of taking Film production.  For this project, I spent a lot more time behind the camera, essentially taking on the role of the cinematographer. This was an unusual role for me, as I went into Film class focused a lot more on the pre-production process.  I’d like to get feedback on the shot composition and general aesthetic of the film. Are the shots well-composed and professional-looking? Were there ways I could have framed our shots to add more nuance and meaning?

Next year, I am going to Wheaton College, a small liberal arts school in Massachusetts.  While I haven’t committed to anything yet, I am currently planning on double majoring in Film and Creative Writing.  My overall career goals are still very nebulous, but I’m looking forward to expanding on my skills in both of these fields and discovering what I am truly passionate about.

Thank you so much for your time,

Hudson Jones
