Documentary

Introduction

In this project we had to make a documentary interviewing someone interesting and connecting it to the outside world. This project was especially fun just because of how open the prompt was. In English class I decided to interview long time friend/boss Jason Strubing.

Jason and I have always been kind of close and he’s been a really good friend and an even better mentor for me. He teaches me things I would’ve never thought about and keeps me in check when I need it. He is very involved in the skate scene. The Strubing family has always had a name for themselves after Justin Strubing became a very famous skateboarder. They created a shop in Santa Cruz called Skateworks, which is still alive today. Jason and his dad grinded out the shop to become stable and well, soon after Jason wanted to do his own thing. he opened his own location of Skateworks. This was in Los altos. Jason has been there for 10 years in a few weeks, and he plans to stay. Covid took a huge blow on the shop at first, however they bounced back very strong. I wanted to show the process of how he made Covid and advantage for his business.

I had so much fun animating this and interviewing Jason. This takes place in the back of skateworks, there is a ramp in the back that I skate almost everyday. This animation is what I do and how I do it. Some challenges I ran into were my drawing skills, I found this very difficult to draw and drawing the skateboard was the hardest part. This was hard just because the angles were changing so frequently, it made it difficult to draw.

Here is some behind the scenes :).

This project was so valuable, I learned so much from interviewing people for the first time, to learning my mental limit on homework. I butchered the interview to the maximum, but we got the information we needed. If I could go back I would redo that interview and try to keep it more smooth while maintaining a nice flow. I was too focused on the questions I had set, I didn’t really ask many follow up questions like I should have been. I also wish I had more time for this animation, I procrastinated heavily and it resulted in a product I wasn’t proud of. I am going to redo it and make it better for myself and might post it here.
