10-Year

For the ten-year project, we were assigned to make something in Illustrator that showed both our hopes and fears for ourself ten years in the future. I originally made the giraffe out of acrylic paint, but decided on changing it to vector art. My alternate media is the collage that makes up the cityscape.

Artist Statement: For my ten year project, I imagined myself out of college and in a career related to my major, Psychology. My hopes for my life included being a kind and caring person, living somewhere new, and having a successful career. I feared being alone and losing myself in a large city. I depicted both my hope of being a helpful person and my fear of being alone through the symbol of a giraffe. Giraffes are known as caring animals, but I only put one, making it alone. The neck extending above the cityscape represents a successful career ('rising above') as well as being lost. I chose to make the cityscape a collage out of pictures of faces and words to add to the fear of having to wander, as well as to differentiate it visually from the giraffe of acrylic paint.
