Narrative Visual Perspective in Digital Media

Surreal Composition

We used Adobe Photoshop to create surreal images. My image was inspired by how I feel when I play my guitar.

A Vacuum of Sound

Before creating our final surreal composition we did some funny compositions to practice:

Multi-Layer Art Project

This was probably my favorite Digital Media project ever. We had to make an artwork that related to our Worldbuilding project in English. The first step was to create a rough design of our art project.

Paper Sketch (1st Draft)

At first, I was planning on making a lightbox. So in my first draft, I put as much detail as possible into the art. But when I switched over to the stacked wood art option I had much more room to work with. The biggest question was how I wanted to position my artwork.

Artist Statment

For my multi-layer project, I wanted to design the whole city of Galentine. When writing our world-building project I spent most of my time creating the city. A lot of the back story of the city didn’t make it into the treatment so I wanted to show it in my artwork. I made sure to include the castle of North Galentine where the Count that rules over the land lives. A path descends through a town with houses and apartments all stacked on and up against one another. This is meant to represent the rest of the country, those who aren’t nobles live in strictly policed villages by the Count’s enforcers. Scattered around these villages are factories in which the people of Galentine work. A worker is seen hammering molten metal into shape, he is the Father of our protagonist. The outskirts of the village borders the forest which is why tree stumps line the edge of the village, past these stumps we enter the forest following our protagonist who ventures “Beyond the Forest”.

I was originally going to do a light box but realized I could add more detail and layers with the stacked wood art option. When sketching the project I sketched as if it was making a lightbox so all of my designs were small and all stuck together. It was only in Illustrator that I began designing the project as if it were a stacked wood art project. I was able to add many details and spread out my designs to properly organize the story I wanted the art to tell. I wanted to add many elements of the story some that made it into our Narrative Treatments and some that didn’t make it to the final draft.

When starting this project I had a hard time wrapping my mind around the 3D aspect of the design but I worked through it and found using color in Illustrator helped me visualize the art as I was making it. Looking back on the assembly process of the art every time a new layer was printed I got so excited to see my art, which I had been working on for such a long time, become something I could hold. Overall I am really proud of how my project turned out, If I did it again I would have less supports because I like the depth that comes from the border.

Build Video

The building process was the most fun. I filmed every stage and compiled it all into a build video. Once the first 2 layers were printed I began staying at Freestyle whenever It was open to get this project finished. I had my music on and the camera recording tuned the world out and just glued the layers together. Some of the pieces that came out weren’t completely cut so I had to widdle them down so I could pop the wooden pieces out but overall I loved working on this project.
