Conceptual

Introduction

This project is designed to make juniors think differently and use abstract methods of expression to express themselves. This project also serves as a introduction to the many tools the students will use, including DSLR cameras, Tascam Audio Recorders, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere Pro, and other tools.

Going from regular school to freestyle was definitely a jump. Working at freestyle has helped me develop skills that I think will be very useful in the future I want for myself. It’s not just in the technological aspects either, English class at freestyle has been a huge relief compared to taking something at Mountain View. In english, i have been able to expand my skills with creative writing and storytelling, which i think is much better than whatever i had to do in sophomore english class.

Reflection

My first project at Freestyle was the Art Reflection video where all freestyle students visited the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SF MOMA for short). I was tasked with one thing for the trip, find something that makes me think deep, take some photos of it, and write a script about why it made me think. I did my analysis on a painting, even though there were sculptures and a skybridge filled with color, i was intrigued by a black and white paint and photo. This was my first time using the audio recorder and adobe audition so the audio quality is below what i like and want.

the final look at the premiere editing file before being sent to youtube

I learned a lot about a lot of the tools we use at freestyle today. The one I am most proud of would probably be adobe audition. I had never touched audio editing before in my life so to learn something overlooked a lot in media inspires me to make my audio more noticeable and make it more impactful. Re-learning how to write was also interesting. I do some journalistic writing and it is much different than script writing or fiction writing. i definitely will use this experience in my future as a content creator.

Photoshop Blend Modes

This project is to learn and practice about blending photos in photoshop to make them do more. you can blend photos with another copy of it to make to make it lighter or darker. you can also blend photos into other photos, making photos that would normally be impossible to make.

  1. What do you value about learning about and creatively using Photoshop Blend Modes? I learned how to blend two photos, and how some photos will mix with others, color-wise.
  2. How do you see yourself using your new Photoshop skills with your creative projects? I will use my photoshop skills for Youtube thumbnails and posters for my films. I would also use it for some photo mixing.

DSLR Practice Photos

Save your webpage. Write a short introduction to the DSLR Practice sessions – Av Mode with shallow and deep depth of field, Tv mode with long exposure night photography, flash practice with portraits in front of backdrops, P-mode with ISO changes, altering White Balance in Digital Media to give the viewer some background and context about what you are trying to feature in this section.

When first starting at freestyle, we got familiar with our cameras very quickly, it was the first thing that we did. We learned the different modes of the camera and how they get affected by setting changes, like Tv mode will let us change the shutter speed of the camera and it will automatically change other settings to make the photo look good. on the camera, we can also change the white balance in order to make some images feel like a certain feeling. making a photo colder with a white balance that makes white turn to a light-blue for example.

To be honest, i have been pretty familiar with DSLR cameras for a while, so it wasnt really learning, it was more just a refresher and practice which i very much apperciated. For most of my photos, i use M-mode, which is manual, where you change everything independent of each other, but other times i will use Tv mode in order to not worry about the shutter speed when im a baskeball game or something like that.

Film

In Film production, we do a lot of activities that may take time outside of class in order to finish. I love film; the things we shoot feel so fun, like we are on a movie set. One thing I value about being a film student is the movies we analyze; it’s not often, but it provides a whole new perspective on filmmaking and drastically changes the way you think about movies.

Experimental Film

Each experimental film stems from a conceptual statement. My statement was “Covying the feeling or message of anger through serving the community.”

Synopsis:

My Conceptual statement is Conveying the message of anger through serving the community.
Overall, I want to show the lifecycle of a plastic bag, from the store to the streets. The shot I
want to do is a close up shot of the bag being filled with groceries with the camera locked with a
side view of the bag. Then, as the bag is carried through the car, the camera is still locked on
the bag, perhaps it is a green screen shot cropped in so the bag does not move. Anyway, the
bag makes it to the house, gets unloaded, and is thrown away. Now the camera angle changes
to like a far away shot where the camera is on the other side of the street. The bag as it is being
thrown away, misses the garbage can and starts floating away in the wind. After floating around
for about 3-5 seconds on screen, the bag gets stuck on a fence and gets torn from it. After
getting torn, it lands on the street or side of the street, where it lands, someone steps on the
bag, and then the screen fades to black. The music changes throughout the film, going from a
happier tone at the beginning to a more dark and angry-esk music towards the end. The colors
of the beginning of the film would be warmer colors while the ending would become more
colder.

Above is the synopsis or what the movie looks like in words. it covers it well for the most part, I think it definitely could be better, but this is the first project for film students, so it’s supposed to be of lower quality

Film Exercises.

These exercises are used to get familiar with Premiere and all the ways you can use it.

This is the first assignment in film. This one in particular was made by four people total, we had a complication in editing, so there are multiple different styles of editing in the shots. The goal was to improve our camera work with the camera.

I took the final scene of The Truman Show and wanted to remake it because I had watched the movie recently. The goal of this activity was learning and practice the greenscreen.

I think I had ambitions for this assignment, but I didn’t follow through on the quality. also its a shamless self-promotion that I feel very bad about now. This assignment helps us learn and practice the “double mint effect” in Premiere, or overlaying two videos on top of each other at the same time.
