In English we were given the task of writing a flash fiction, a story told in 500 words or less, with limited dialogue. Then based on this flash fiction we drew a 3 page graphic novel using the techniques we learned from reading Persepolis.

Eevven

Graphic Novel

The forest was silent. A single dew drop rolled down the spine of a leaf, and as it fell it had a single thought.

“I don’t want to die.”

As the drop splattered on the rough tree bark, a strange thing happened. The tree bark started to bulge and expand like a balloon, when all at once it snapped back to its original shape. There stood a three inch tall girl.

“I want to live.”

The girl was a new elf. Eevven stood gazing out at the dark shadowed forest. This is where she starts her journey. She settled down in a soft mushroom, near a vast prairie. Each day she would walk through the tall stalks of grass doing her job of planting mushrooms. No one told her what to do. She just knew.

One day Eevven was planting all her mushrooms when she saw a strange creature. It had wafer thin wings that held it slim black body suspended in the air. Oh how she wanted to fly like that! She left her mushroom basket and ran after the creature, marveling in its beauty and splendor. The elegant sweeps of the jeweled wings left Eevven awe struck. Soon the lovely butterfly flew too high and was caught in an updraft, whisked away on a current if wind too strong. Disheartened Eevven returned to house.

Soon it was fall. The leaves were flung from the trees by powerful gusts, and Eevven watched them fall. She had an idea. She found the biggest leaf she could, hoisted up to a high branch using spider web silk, and climbed up herself. She sat on the leaf, and waited for a gust of wind strong enough to fling her off. But it never came. Eevven was too heavy. She sighed and climbed back down the tree.

Eevven worked hard day and night, weaving grass together, until she had her own wings. She climbed up the tree, and then, she soared.
