Women Gamers in a Male Gaming World

book cover This is the book I wrote in English, after we finished reading Freakonomics, by Stephen Dubner and Steven Levitt. The assignment was to write a documentary/research paper on a topic that intrigued us. I decided to write about video games, because it is a form of activity that is relative and common in a lot of people's lifestyles today. My dad is a video game hardware designer, so I grew up around video games. After interviewing three very kind people (in order of appearance in book), Josh Anderson, Ed Chen, and Jenna Leder, I was able to answer my driving question: what attracted female gamers to video games when they are sometimes stereotyped as not fit to play? I took all these photos, and I want to thank Christina Chen and Monica Hsu for being my model in some of these photos. I also want to thank Lin Dailey, for setting me up with my interviewee. To shoot photos of Ed Chen, I went to his company, AMD. Since I am his daughter, he snuck me in and I was able to shoot several photos of his workspace and him at work. Many of these photos are of my brother's consoles and games. Because Lin Dailey lives on the East Coast, I was unable to photograph her in person. I did personally photograph Josh Anderson at his house, with several shots of him playing xbox with a Halo helmet. The rest of the photos of women are of Monica Hsu and my mother. We sent these books in to VioVio to be printed, and I designed this book using InDesign. It took a several weeks to write the actual research paper and gather enough information, and then it days after school to put the words and photos into InDesign. InDesign is a program used by professionals to create book layouts. This is especially useful when one is designing a magazine or book. I designed my whole book and layed out all the words. I remember one night, I stayed at Freestyle till 9:30 pm to work on this book. It was very stressful, but the end result turned out great. Please feel free to look at my book :)
