Introduction

These projects highlight the challenges and process of developing unique personal styles in each student. In this, students are given the opportunity to evolve their technical skills with the modern professional equipment provided.

Write a short reflection about your 1st project at Freestyle with the Conceptual Unit in English and Digital Media.

Art Reflection Video

At Freestyle one of the first events that we had was a field trip to SF MOMA, this allowed students to observe professional art made by artists around the world. In addition to this we also made Art Reflections in our english class in which we covered one art piece that we personally found interesting or striking; and its relation to the feeling of awe and how it evoked these thoughts within ourselves. We then proceeded to make short videos with voice overs of our reflections and graphics of the art pieces that we chose to cover. To do this we learned how to use Adobe Premiere to edit together clips to make videos, whilst doing this project I felt that I gained a lot of experience from the revision process and made a lot of additional technical skill advancements regarding my use of Adobe software that I was already familiar with.

This photo depicts the key framing used between clips to adjust and transform the clips that I chose, additionally it shows the layers of audio and text at the bottom of the frame along with the transitions I used and the effects; and how I chose to layer the music, voice over text, and photos.

Something that I valued from the Art Reflection Video production was the new technical skills that I picked up while learning to use Adobe Premiere Pro. Additionally, in my english class I received effective feedback that really helped me understand my weak points in writing.

Photoshop Blend Mode Editing

In this section, we began to explore different Adobe software. Here, we began learning how to effectively use Photoshop to change the appearance of photos to give them more clarity.

I value mostly the skill that it gives me. Similarly, I also like the creative freedom that it gives me when I learn new skills. And I also really enjoyed the ability to edit photos more practically. I can see myself using these new Photoshop skills frequently as they do seem like the baseline for getting to know Photoshop. And I will be very excited to incorporate these skills into my position at ‘SLAM Magazine’ one of my school’s clubs where I am one of the designers for the layout of the magazine.

Animation

Animation Introduction

I’ve been developing my animation and art skills for a while before I entered Freestyle. So far in animation we’ve been doing a lot of traditional animation and it’s been really fun. My technical skills have increased significantly ever since joining Freestyle’s Animation and the outcome of all the work we’ve been doing so far this semester has been very rewarding. What I value most as an Animation student is the experience I gain from the work that we are assigned. Personally, I find that theres something so visceral and thrilling about sitting down and animating for hours and finaly getting to see the outcome is more exciting than literally any other thing i’ve experienced.

I wanted to make something familiar and simple since this was one of our first projects in animation, and what’s more familiar than plants? I was influenced by an online horror ARG that explores the world as grocery produce becomes sentient. And I found myself drawn towards this concept a lot and so I wanted to add my own little spin on it by starting with the origins.
