Humor

Introduction

The Humor project only took place in English, where we studied different humor techniques, did rhetorical analysis, and tried to make each other laugh. We read Slaughterhouse 5, which I personally didn’t enjoy, as well as our own choice of humorous media, and then were assigned to create something humorous of our own. I decided to work with my friend Karen Chien, and we created a humorous comic, which we presented in class.

Humor Script and proposal

Karen and I landed on an idea for our comic that surrounded the fanfiction tropes of Y/N and their CEO Alpha. We used tropes from fanfiction and shoujo manga in order to add humor in terms of references, and then used the book 1984, which we previously read in English class, as the other reference. We though this would be good since our audience for the presentation would have all read 1984, so even if they didn’t get the other references, they would get those ones. We also referenced the art style of a popular Yuri manga called “The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t a Guy at All” by Sumiko Arai, where she has a mainly black and white art style, but also uses pops of green. Instead, we used red as our accent color. We also referenced iconic poses of y/n and ceo, like the one below.

Before we could create our comic, we had to do a proposal to Mr. Greco, and write a script. We added descriptions of our panels, and this is what we used to decide who would do which panels. The humor techniques we used were:

Caricature: exaggeration of a person’s mental, physical, or personality traits, in wisecrack form.
Farce: a comic dramatic work using buffoonery and horseplay and typically including crude characterization and ludicrously improbable situations.
Parody: humorous version of any well-known writing or performance.
Pun: a joke exploiting the different possible meanings of a word or the fact that there are words that sound alike but have different meanings (ex. “I’m glad I know sign language, it’s pretty handy.” “I am on a seafood diet. Every time I see food, I eat it.”)

The references we made to 1984 included:

Thought-crime
Double plus good
Big brother
Minitruth corp
Records department
Obrien
Rats
Julia
Room 101
Victory coffee
Telescreen
Ingsoc
Red ankle sore

Other references:

y/n and ceo tropes
Fanfiction
All might
Man looking up meme
Tamaki from ohshc
Uwu shy
Not so shoujo love story
Juju corporations, my ceo is cursed

Final project and presentation

Our final presentation went really well! Even the people who didn’t read fanfiction laughed, and we got to share our love of the cringe with the cringiest people we know (endearing). We read our comic aloud with me playing the CEO and Karen playing Y/n Winston, which really represents our relationship in real life. This is us at graduation!

And here is our comic for your viewing pleasure.
