Lyrical Essay

In this unit, we were able to write an essay about almost literally any topic be desired. We had to write it in a lyrical sense. I choose to do an essay on a topic I’ve always tried to do a project on but never was able to pull through on, how imagination has to be dark sometimes but also light in others.

Intention Statement

Ouroboros is a lyrical essay about how there is a dark side to everything and that’s not always a bad thing, mainly in the imagination. In the first section I put a poem I wrote about this topic and intentionally put it in a snake form, I made a drawing in Adobe Illustrator to make it look like the ouroboros snake was eating itself. Then I went in depth to explain why I think this way. I’ve been wanting to write a paper about the dark and the light. I find psychology very interesting and enjoy fiction and films about the evil minds and the balance between good and evil. I found articles about artists who explore the dark side of human nature. I used Sigmund Freud’s theories of the ego, superego, and the id to get my point across. I also interviewed friends and family members to get examples of their experiences with the dark. I made my essay choppy to reflect the subject matter. My father gave me the idea of the ouroboros metaphor and I built off that idea. I really enjoyed the snake metaphor since it illustrated the balance between good and bad and how if you have too much light or too much darkness it can destroy you like the snake consuming itself.

Reflection

I actually loved this assignment because I had so much fun with it. I got to express myself in anyway I wished and talk about a subject that I was super interested in. I relearned how much I enjoy writing especially things I’m passionate about. I got to do research I actually enjoyed.
