For the music recording project I recorded local musicians in the Freestyle recording studio and mixed what they played to create a professional sounding song. I learned how to use a recording studio, using Pro Tools and other software in the studio. I then used Pro Tools again to mix the audio to make sure the musicians sound as a good as possible.

Artist Statement
For this project I mixed and recorded my Dads band performing Thunderclouds by Sia. When recording, I made sure to make sure to give light feedback in between takes but mostly I let the artist’s themselves figure it out. I let them do as many takes as needed to make sure they got the best recording possible. I learned how to use the recording studio so much better from this project.
When mixing, I wanted to keep the emotion the performers put into the performance but also making sure everyone instrument was heard well. I used compression and EQing to do this. I felt I gained a greater understanding of pro tools mixing capabilities as a result of this project.
Reflection
I really enjoyed this project. I had fun working with my Dads band. The song they performed I had actually played on months earlier and it was really fun to see the progress on the song. I had done music all my life but being on the recording engineer side was such a unique and fun experience. I had also never done any kind of mixing before and it was really cool to see how much better the song sounded after mixing.
