For these photos, I experimented with using a speed light to create different lighting effects. I used a lower aperture on purpose to prevent the lighting from being too bright, although looking back now, I think I should have kept it a little higher to make the pictures brighter. The first image shows what it looks like without using the speed light. The only light source is the tiny bit of sunlight from my window. It’s very dark and hard to see the subject. In the second image, I pointed the speed light directly at the subject. This made it easier to see the subject, but it’s very harsh. The middle of the subject’s face is very bright, but its perimeter is still dark. In the third image, I aimed the speed light at the left wall. This made the subject’s left side brighter, but created a big shadow on its right side. I think the fourth image is the best. I used the built-in white bounce card on the speed light. The subject is lit up evenly over its whole surface. The lighting is soft and even the background is lit up. For the last image, I used the built in diffuser cap. It is similar to direct lighting, with some of the same problems of being too harsh and dark on the edges.
