How Did Star Boy Come to be?

One of the biggest projects here at freestyle is zenith, since it’s a project where you can do whatever you want as long as it’s connected to your elective class. I knew I wanted to do stop motion because it would challenge me and I could have a lot more creative freedom for the vision I had for it. As a senior graduation has been on my mind and I knew I wanted to make a film about growing up. Especially because change can be scary, but truthfully becoming an adult is just finding a realistic way to make your dreams happen.

Process

Obviously stop motion seemed intimidating for me since I’ve never done anything like it before, so I made it as easy as possible! I made paper cut outs, instead of making a whole doll.

After all the props were made and I had written a script that was recorded, by my dear friend Darian. Once I had the audio, I sectioned it into 44 scenes. Then I timed each once to calculate how many pictures I needed for each one when animating in 12 fps.

Once I had the math all done, I then proceeded to make a detailed story board. On the left side I put the amount of seconds the scene was, then on the right side I put how many pictures I needed for each. This made my production process very fast. In fact, I was able to film everything in 3 hours total!

all I needed were some trusty friends, my camera, and it was go time !
