Going into Senior year, students are surrounded with uncertainties. We are all becoming aware of who we are as people as we come to the end of being students, well at least high school students. As I began working on college apps I have been constantly faced with the question, who am I. At Freestyle we began a unit that revolved around that very question. Beginning in English, we where given the time to work on our college personal essay, with lessons focusing on how to condense an entire human existence into 650 words. In Digital Media we began working on a mandala, which as I have learned is a peaceful experience that can be done with minimal artistic skills, it is meditative. In film we did a project similar to the English essay, that included producing a film with a narration to convey our feelings towards the world around us. Through this project I have learned that I am a flexible person with many different personalities and friendships. This makes college apps very difficult asI have discovered myself to be more than an archetype. In English, our process began with a brainstorming challenge called the essence objects list. This asked us to write a list of objects that reflect us. This was mine:
- My Cat
- Records
- Black Belt
- Movies
- Santa Fe Soup
- Tarot Cards
- B… my teddy bear 🙂
- Jason Voorhees mask
- Shrek doll
- Superman Cape
- Old Bay Spice
- Orioles Hat
- Drive-in Movie Ticket
- My Grandma (not an object but whatever)
- Quilt
- Hallmark xmas movies
The Grand Museum Of Hersh:
This year, we went on a field trip t the San Fransisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA). We were asked to collect 3 pieces of art that we felt reflected us, and 2 pieces that we felt didn’t. This challenged us to reflect on ourselves through art.

These first 3 artworks represent different sides of me and my creativity. I like to use various colors in my work to my advantage. I like to use color to convey tones and draw attention to details when necessary. I also enjoy stories behind the scenes. Underlying things that you must look closer to find, and I hope to put such things in my films. I myself am a person who is often written off superficially, but have much more going on beneath the surface. Another major part of me prevalent in most of my writing is my value of social justice. I appreciate the power art has to tell the important stories and represent people and experiences.
Who I Am Not
I am not someone who looks for other worlds through technology and logical lenses. I believe in destiny and human interaction and energy. I also do not see things in an abstract manner. I see more than black and white and I see happenings on all spectrums, but I believe some of the story must be remotely visible. I am a balance between the above two pieces. I am not meaninglessly abstract, but I am not logical in my approaches to the surrounding world.
